Role description
Energy Safety Canada is seeking a senior legal executive to act as principal legal advisor and Corporate Secretary within its senior management team. Reporting to the President and CEO, the General Counsel advises the Board, senior management and staff on legal, commercial and ethical matters tied to business strategy. The mandate includes reviewing and negotiating commercial agreements; administering Board and Member meetings, minutes and corporate records; advising on regulatory requirements, governance, employment and privacy matters; monitoring emerging issues involving AI, data security and cybersecurity; managing disputes and litigation with external counsel where appropriate; and overseeing intellectual-property matters including copyright and trademarks. The organization operates nationally in energy-sector safety, training and certification, making the role a combination of strategic counsel, governance leadership and hands-on commercial legal work.
Qualifications
Candidates must have at least ten years of legal practice together with in-house counsel experience and strong corporate/commercial expertise. Experience as a corporate secretary in a public-company-style governance environment is preferred, as is familiarity with employment and privacy law. Energy-sector in-house experience is an asset. The role requires strong business judgment, the ability to translate legal issues into practical advice, comfort with ambiguity, risk assessment and prioritization, excellent collaboration, organization and communication, and a high degree of accuracy and discretion.
