Role description
Strathcona Paper is seeking a Process Engineering Supervisor for its mill operation in Greater Napanee, Ontario.
The role
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Process Engineering Supervisor is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Stock Preparation Department, including the Beater Room and related process activities.
The position helps ensure that stock supplied to the Board/Paper Machine meets the required mix, standard and quantity for production.
Principal responsibilities include:
• Leading day-to-day operations in the Stock Preparation Department.
• Supporting production planning and directing operating priorities.
• Troubleshooting process and quality issues using testing, analysis and operating data.
• Monitoring incoming fibre and raw-material quality and supporting supplier evaluation.
• Working with Procurement on material availability, quality, service and cost considerations.
• Supporting product-development initiatives, process trials and technical requests.
• Monitoring equipment condition and coordinating maintenance requirements.
• Developing and updating operating, safety, testing and logging procedures.
• Leading special projects, shutdown work and test runs.
• Contributing to operating and capital budgets and monitoring departmental spending.
• Supervising, training and developing operating personnel.
• Supporting environmental compliance, safety and continuous improvement.
The role directly supervises four Lead Hands and is responsible for 13 hourly employees.
Qualifications
Experience and qualifications
• University degree in Industrial, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Understanding of papermaking processes, stock-preparation systems, equipment, chemicals and fibres is desirable.
• Experience troubleshooting process issues using testing, analysis and operating data.
• Knowledge of instrumentation, process loops, mechanical technology, computer systems and database-management tools.
• Working knowledge of health and safety requirements, employment and labour practices, environmental responsibilities and operational compliance in manufacturing.
• Strong planning, budgeting, organizational, communication and team-leadership skills.
The posting also specifies 5 years of manufacturing-operations experience, 2 years of supervisory experience, and excellent English. Paper-manufacturing experience is preferred.
Additional information
Salary: $122,000 to $152,000 per year.
Employment: full-time, permanent, on site in Greater Napanee.
