About our client:
When the ground moves, structures must remain stable. Our client designs steel structures that support the most powerful disconnectors, switches and insulators in the North American grid.
Our client is a Quebec-based company recognized for its expertise in high-voltage equipment (15 kV– 800 kV). They have major projects across North America and internationally.
It is a multidisciplinary engineering environment combining structural, mechanical, electrical and automation engineering. Their culture is focused on innovation, technical rigor and collaboration.
Our client is currently looking for a structural engineer passionate about designing highly reliable industrial structures, with expertise in seismic design, to strengthen the stability of their electrical substations ranging from 15 kV to 800 kV.
The seismic analysis engineer will be responsible for modeling and validating steel structures supporting high-voltage equipment (15 kV to 800 kV). They will ensure compliance with seismic standards and the structural safety of steel frameworks, equipment bases and line structures in electrical substations.
Main responsibilities:
- Design and size steel structures for electrical substations and high-voltage equipment of all
types.
- Perform structural and seismic analyses using specialized software such as
Advance Design America (ADA), SAP2000 or equivalents.
- Integrate dynamic response and site-specific seismic spectra into analysis models.
- Evaluate the dynamic and structural behavior and strength of gantries, columns,
beams, equipment supports, insulators and busbars.
- Optimize designs for industrial manufacturing (galvanized steel, bolted/welded connections,
bracing).
- Produce calculation reports, technical drawings and engineering reports required for internal and client approval.
- Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams in an integrated engineering
environment and present equipment force and stress results.
- Participate in the seismic qualification of new products.
- Evaluate the seismic performance of mechanical anchors and foundations.
- Prepare technical reports, calculation reports, and design recommendations.
- Provide technical support during the review of installation and anchoring drawings.
- In-depth knowledge of standards and client requirements:
o NBCC 2020 – Section 4.1.8 Seismic
o CSA S16 : Design of Steel Structures
o IEEE 693 : Recommended Practice for Seismic Design of Substations
o ASCE 7 : Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures
Desired profile:
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering – structural specialization, with a master's degree in structural dynamics or seismic design.
- 8 to 10 years of relevant experience in the design of industrial or
energy-related steel structures.
- Proficiency in at least one advanced analysis software: Advance Design America (ADA), SAP2000 or equivalent.
- Ability to interpret and apply North American seismic requirements (IEEE 693, ASCE 7, etc.).
- Member of the OIQ.
- Analytical mindset, autonomy, rigor and attention to detail.
- Strong interest in innovation, the reliability of energy structures and high-voltage manufacturing.
- Excellent communication skills in French and English, both spoken and written.
* NOTE : Bilingualism (French and English) is required for this position, as it involves interactions with clients outside Quebec, such as in Ontario and British Columbia as well as the United States.
