Role description
The opportunity
Nova Scotia Legal Aid is recruiting a Chief Executive Officer to provide overall leadership, strategic direction and organizational performance for the province-wide legal-aid system.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will lead a network of legal and administrative professionals delivering criminal, family and social-justice services across Nova Scotia.
Key responsibilities
• Provide strategic leadership and guide organizational priorities and performance.
• Steward public resources responsibly and strengthen operational effectiveness.
• Support effective governance and work closely with the Board and senior leadership team.
• Build a collaborative, accountable and inclusive organizational culture.
• Maintain trusted relationships with government, the judiciary, the legal profession, Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities, justice partners and community organizations.
• Serve as a credible public leader while advancing access to justice across the province.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is an accomplished senior leader with experience in the legal profession, legal aid, the justice sector or another complex public-service environment. Demonstrated success leading people, strategy and organizational performance is important, along with strong business and financial acumen, governance experience, sound judgment and stakeholder relationship skills. Knowledge of Nova Scotia’s justice system is important. A law degree and membership, or eligibility for membership, with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society or another Canadian law society is an asset.
